I woke up before dawn the next morning and tried to leave. But the garage door was closed. I eventually found a little room where some on-duty firefighters were hanging out. They didn't know who I was so I had to explain that I was a backpacker who had stayed the night in the dorm and could you let me out, please?
The hitch to Quito was uneventful. Ecuador wasn't as bad for hitchhiking as I'd thought. The only rub was getting dropped off at the western outskirts of Santo Domingo and having to walk through the entire city. But I did make it to Quito that night.
My host, Paula, wasn't in town when I arrived, but I called her cell phone and followed her directions. I had to take a bus to the University and then walk a block or two to her house. Her roommate let me in, showed me my room, and left me be.
